What is Ragamuffin Nation?
It started with a dream to make a movie about Rich Mullins. I would be on long road trips when I started seeing the movie in my head. And that’s all I thought it was—a dream…until I met Dave Mullins in early 2010. What started out as strangers having chips and salsa turned into a genuine friendship filled with the adventure of making a movie, Ragamuffin.
Actually the story—my story—started way before Ragamuffin. If you’d like to know the whole story, you can read it in my book, Sinners, Saints, & the Furious Love of God,which includes tales of watching Rich Mullins in concert, smoking cigarettes with Brennan Manning, and falling in love with Christ after discovering He was in love with me.
After completing the film, we noticed a throng of people reaching out to us with very different stories of brokenness, but they all had one thing in common: they had no place where they could be real.
In 2014, we decided to start Ragamuffin Retreats to provide a space for those fellow ragamuffins to come, to rest, and to re-connect with Jesus and fellow believers—fellow believers who wouldn’t beat them up for not being where they should be.
This was a common story. We noticed very quickly that our ministry drew a wide range of folks; everyone from porn addicts to pastors. When we asked why they felt stirred to come, they all had the same answer: I don’t have a safe place to be honest about my struggles. We realized that with our movies (Ragamuffin, Brennan, and Rich Mullins: A Ragamuffin’s Legacy) we were drawing not only people fed up with the church, but people and pastors who lead the church. Too often they find themselves in the same place as the excommunicated—looking for a place where they are accepted as they are, not where they should be.
In 2015, I made the movie Brennan, a fictionalized story about the real life author of The Ragamuffin Gospel, Brennan Manning. He personally signed off on the project before his passing in April of 2013. It was an honor and a privilege to be able to tell his story in hopes that many more would come to be seized by the power of a Great Affection.
After wrapping up the movie through a series of saints and miracles, we launched a 501c3 non-profit, [link] Ragamuffin Ministries.
God’s Fool, our next film—about the life and faith of St. Francis of Assisi—is ready to made made. Because we have decided to give away all the proceeds of this film, it will be funded through our non-profit.
In 2017, we launched Ragamuffin TV, our own streaming service to serve as a direct to customer platform service for our content. Bottom line, we wanted to have a home for our past, present, and future content.
So what IS Ragamuffin Nation?
We are. And so are you—yes you, the one reading this. If you have made it this far in reading the above, you are apart of Ragamuffin Nation. You are also one whom Jesus loves and is crazy about. You are someone who “God loves as you are, not as you should be, because none of us are as we should be.”
Everything you will find on this website is what we are offering to the community. We make movies. We host retreats. We are working to fund various ministries which are working to be the hands and feet of Christ.
You will read about our future hopes and dreams to expand our gatherings beyond retreats…to continue building opportunities for the disconnected to get connected. Some have seen what’s been happening and called it a ministry, others, a movement. We call it a church for the churchless. We are just another chapter in God’s story, another member of the body of Christ, and another manifestation of what belongs to God—we are His church.
